    Back in Amsterdam

I am currently enroute to Amsterdam, my first hub!! I am looking forward to spending a little time here and having a go at some memorable routes. I might even pop over to London to see my brother.

Shams, thanks so much. I never go anywhere without a cup of tea. My wife is British you know. And its always mit milch - to mix in a little German. I hope you'll be joining me.

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

This excerpt from my flight log is why I love flying in Europe.

Amsterdam - Innsbruk. Ahhh yes. Innsbruk on a cloudy, low visibility day. It doesn't get any better than that unless maybe it is at night. ATC vectored me for a visual approach to RW 26R. 26R is a very short RW not acceptable for landing. They cleared me to land 5 miles out at 10,000 ft with airport elevation at 1900. I almost made it. I had anticipated this and was already at full flaps, gear down and 140kts. I got down OK but was too fast to land. Missed approach. Terrain all sides up to 10000 ft. I climbed at max rate to 10,000 ignoring ATC instructions to make a 180 degree turn and stay at 2900 ft. I asked for and got a clearance for LOC 26 approach. They wanted me to sidestep to 26R. We finally got that straightened out and I am on a workable approach this time. Innsbruk has an offset Localizer, so it is not a straight in approach. Throw into the mix that it is a short runway and my autobrakes are out and I had a handful. Made a very nice short field landing and stopped in time to make the turn. Very cool!!!

    Welcome back Mike!

I remember last time you've been here we made a small party Party!!!

So as Amsterdam hub pilot's already known as "party animals" who didn't party long time, any chance that me and Chris start to order the food? Big Smile

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

Give me a shout when you come over to EGLL. Ill clear the AHM's desk off a bit - kepping all my files of the new routes piled up on it. Actually your welcome to try one of my new routes from EGCC. I put the kettle on......... Tetley's or Earl Gray?

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

Will do. I almost forgot about that one!!

Regarding tea, either is fine as long as its English breakfast tea. I was in a little restuarante in Germany (real life) and I was trying to order tea. She didn't speak English and I didn't speak German. She was asking me if I wanted black tea. All I knew was that I wanted it with milk (mit milch in German). It turns out that the opposite of black tea is fruit tea. Finally I got the point across but not before we had the whole establishment laughing. I always maintain that you have to have a sense of humor if you are going to try to be cross cultural.

As it turns out, my brother is in Denver getting his CAT IV certificate. I guess I will have to catch him another time.

For some strange reason, we drink English breakfast tea at all times of the day. Apparently it is always breakfast somewhere.Big Smile

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

Well guys, after spending a bunch of time in Mumbai getting our mini-hub routes up and running, I am again headed for Amsterdam.

    I will probably

    • Pop over to Frankfurt to catch up with Ian and see what new and wonderful things he has planned for Frankfurt.
      • thwarted by weather.
    • Then try to catch up with my brother over in London or wherever he is.
      • done
    • Pop in for a cup of tea with Carl-Warren (check)
      • done
    • We have a new pilot over in Scotland, so maybe a trip over there is in the offing.
      • didn't make it
    • Maybe I can talk Chris (and anyone else who is interested) into meeting me in Nice to see how the retreat center is holding up.
      • flew all around Nice, but didn't make it there
    • Gotta do Innsbruk a time or two. I think that is the number one route at WW.
      • flew in and out of Innsbruck a half dozen times at least
    • Maybe pop up to Stockholm to visit a friend
      • done
    • Check out Copenhagen. I may want to live there some day.
      • Flew over it.
    • A little sun on Palma de Malorca
      • done. Nice airport
    • The list goes on and on.
      • Madrid
      • Lisbon
      • Crete
      • Rome
      • Bilbao
      • Salzburg
      • all done on this trip

I am really excited about all the activity in Europe. You guys have a very active forum. Chris is doing a great job. All of our hubs in Europe seem to be doing really well. WestWind is truly becoming a world airline.

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

I am back in Amsterdam, but not intentionally. Check out this really cool flight log. Cheers all. Sorry Ian, I tried. I will try again in the next few days.

Athens - Frankfurt - Luxembourg - Amsterdam. What a flight! Frankfurt was reporting vis 20 and clear. On the approach, the airport socked in with vis 1/8 mi. I made one approach and never saw the airport. Refiled for Luxembourg which was reporting vis 1/2 mi. On approach vis went to 1/4 mi. An AI aircraft was ahead of me on approach, but failed to get off the rwy. I was instructed to go around. I never saw the airport. Refiled for Amsterdam which was reporting vis 2 mi. which held up until I landed. I don't recall ever having an airport in FS that was so socked in I could not land. I have had lots of approaches to minimums, but have never had to use my alternate airport. Tonight, I got two in one night. I am just glad I had plenty of fuel for the flight with reserves to an alternate and beyond. VERY VERY neat flight.

    Re: Back in Amsterdam

Yes, this is a surprise, Welcome again and you know to find everything. Feel at home.
That was really like an adventure, your last flight. Best thing is, you made it. Something
different than nice weather, smooth landing.
At the moment I am cruising Australia. In a few days I will be heading back for Amsterdam.
I will fly to Kuala Lumpur first, to visit our friend Shams and to fly his sightseeing route with a
small prop. I am looking forward to that.
Being back in Amsterdam we really have to make an appointment for Nice. Lets try to get
    some collegues with us.

Mike, enjoy your stay in Amsterdam. (beware of pickpockets.)
