No planes to see on VATSIM

O.K.  this is a topic that no one seems to be able to fix, and i am hoping someone here has a clue.  I just installed FS9 on my laptop and its powered with Vista (YUK!).  Short of erasing the hard drive, tracking down all the drivers, etc. etc.  i was hoping some one has a fix.   here are the specs.

Vista 32 home, Norton Internet security, 1.46 dual-core, 358mb graphics 2gb ddr2, currently using FScopilot1.7/FSInn1.3.  I also tried it with SQB3 and same results. any thing else requested i can provide.

i think the "firewall" is not letting the info through.  I cant figure out what to turn off to make it work right.  SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

thanks guys, i hope you have a better idea than i do.

Mike, I think your problem is Norton Internet Security :) It almost always is!

Oh lord, dump the Nortons, its the biggest headach you can have in your comp IMO.Theres a free virus program i have run for years called AVAST,its great and it takes nothing ot run it.It updates itself daily, runs in the backround all the time and you wont know its there.Check it out sometime

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Like i said,i have used it for years with no infections and im online pretty much whenever im not working.

Re: No planes to see on VATSIM

Nortan 2008 uses around 70ish% CPU and Nortan 360 doesn't but BOTH of them block absolutly everything from coming in/out of your computer because everything is a "Threat" according to them

I would reccomend AVG for Windows Vista, found at http://free.avg.com/ (don't worry it's free) because Avast can conflict with Some of Vista's security features e.g. Win Firewall, Windows Defence (even when switched off). I personally don't use AVG because I knicked Solphrus Ati-Virus from Work (Don't tell my Boss) because it does have a good level of protection.

     But, it's up to you!

Well I'm using Avast and it's performing quite good for me :) I also had the same problem, just with squawkbox, but added SQBox folder to the exceptions in Avast and now everything's perfect!

you use vista and FS9 with your setup and see other planes?  I primarly use my laptop for work, and I cant afford to lose the data on it.  If the FAA comes to me w/in the 5 years I have to keep docs, and they are gone because of some virus,  I AM SCREWED!  How well does the AVG protect against virus intrusion.  Does the Pay-ware make it so you can't see other airplanes?  I am trying to stay out of the kids bedroom at night while he is sleeping and still use Vatsim when controlers are on.

It just seems funny that I use Norton on a Vista machine and no airplanes, and Norton on an XP machine and airplanes.  i have even tried pluging direectly into the network rather than using the router and still no airplanes.Huh?

Re: No planes to see on VATSIM

I don't use Vista, I use XP (with FSX) but I have "Bumped" into Vista Laptops quite a few times, It may be Windows Defender that might be Blocking it. We all usually suspect Nortan because it isn't liked by most of the Public. Try disableing Windows Defendr (if it's enabled) and replace it with something like SpyBot or Ad-Aware, because they Don't "Block" the Spyware, they remove it when it enters!

And if you want Payware Anti-Virus, I would not Reccomend Nortan, I would use Kaspary (if thats spelt right) because Nortan comes at the Bottom of PC-Pro's PayWare Ant-Virus programs and Kaspary comes at the top by about 100 Points!!

    Kaspersky, thats correct!

It may of been a flaw with Vista Basic or maybe the "Release Candidates/Beta's" back in 2006 or maybe Both!

I back up the important stuff.  but I have so many other docs, about 2 gigs of downloads for teaching.  I try to keep all the FAA pubs on my lap top to save money.

Buy an external Hard Drive, to back up your less important stuff aswell as the important stuff!

Re: No planes to see on VATSIM

wait.. did you say fscopilot 1.7 and fsinn 1.3?

    and did you say FS9?

I'm pretty sure that fscopilot 1.7/fsinn 1.3 are designed for FSX.  I'm not sure that those versions will work with FS9.. I'd suggest using 1.6/1.2 which are the currently supported versions that are compatible with FS9, at least last time I checked..?
